On Friday the 22nd of May, a troop of innocent Windriders set out to play Flunky Ball at Exmouth, having no idea what the result of the stoke and booze levels of this game would result in.
Tash had no clue she would end up thrown into the cold British sea in her favourite dress, Matt had no clue his furniture would end up on his roof that night, Emily didn’t know she was going to be turned into a beautiful mermaid sand sculpture and Dan Barlow did not yet know that with the right amount of excitement he was capable of doing the splits.
Anyways, rewind to not knowing how to play Flunkyball: Windriders confronted each other and after close examination of each team member’s physical strengths and weaknesses, Matt concluded “You can tell that we’re definitely not a Sports club.” We were perhaps proved wrong when two local kiters took to the water and every Windrider looked on in jealousy.
But we had nothing to be jealous of as we were playing the internationally renounced game of Flunky Ball! The best part of Flunky ball turned out to be the penalty drinks which were handed out left, right and centre, especially to Dan Lytton.
The all-girl teams gave the boys a run for their money. The referees were ruthless in observing drops falling from cans. Emily surprised us by drinking lemonade instead of beer and not making it through even three quarters of a can when everyone else was on their second bottle already!
It was not concluded who the best Flunky Ball player on the beach was. The antics took root all over the place and before we knew it Windriders in bikinis were leisurely swimming in the sea, a rugby was lost to the Exmouth current, Rounders became a one-man-against-all kind of game, and all the bottles were empty.
Some may even say that if The Flunky Ball is not here tomorrow, it’s because we killed it.
We had a great time. Thanks to Matt for hosting the afterparty which quickly escalated into mayhem. The furniture on the roof was only the beginning of it, literally. Somehow we all made it out of that house conscious, alive and all in one piece.
We also saw the return of infamous alumni and Windrider co-founder Sam Evans himself who had much to tell about the wonders of London, finishing the day off wonderfully and as one to go down in Windrider history!
