Windsurfing Gwithian

Gwithian, despite being a beach break, is the most popular windsurf spot in the country. This beach picks up a lot of swell, and last year hosted the final of the world wide Red Bull Storm Chase Series, featuring huge waves and winds, which Exeter Windriders bravely made the trip down for.

Don't be tempted to rig-up on the grass above, it's much easier to carry your kit down the steep cliff first. Also, avoid sailing in front of the rocks below the lifeguard hut, as it can be very difficult to get away from.

Gwithian Towans can get huge, we mean huge. Double-mast high days aren't rare, so pack plenty of masts and only go as a group and if you are competent.

Tides: -

It is best to sail here between low and mid tide. High tide is OK but the wave can get fat and getting in may become tricky.

Wind directions: -

Best direction is south-southwest, which is cross-                                                       offshore.

Other useful info:

Drive time from Exeter - 1 hr 50 mins

Locals are friendly, just don't steal their waves

Parking is seasonal, free in winters. Don't park at the FRONT ROW, it's poorly marked and disabled. Too many of us have made that mistake...
